Application

Ammonium nitrate is a high-nitrogen top-dressing fertilizer. The dual ammonium-nitrate nitrogen profile delivers both rapid (nitrate) and sustained (ammonium) nitrogen release — comparable to CAN but without the calcium content. Used for:

  • Cereal top-dressing in higher-rainfall zones
  • Pasture and silage agriculture
  • High-N specialty crops where CAN's calcium is not required
  • Industrial and mining applications (separate regulatory regime)

Regulatory Note

Ammonium nitrate is a dual-use product — both fertilizer and an oxidiser used in industrial-mining explosives. Kenya regulates AN handling under:

  • FAFB Cap 345 regime for fertilizer-grade AN
  • Explosives Act and Mining Act for industrial AN
  • Anti-Terrorism legislation pertaining to precursor materials
  • Customs special-handling protocols at KPA

Sarpah introduces buyers to fertilizer-grade AN only, restricted to FAFB-registered importers with documented agronomic end-use. Sarpah's introductions cover fertilizer-grade AN only; for industrial-explosive AN, see specialist channels.

Compliance

  • Buyer-side product registration with the Fertilizer & Animal Foodstuffs Board (Cap 345 framework) and KEBS standardisation; the buyer is the importer of record
  • KEBS Certificate of Conformity
  • Certificate of Origin from origin Chamber of Commerce
  • NPS / DCI clearance where the Buyer's end-use intersects regulated industries
  • COA, Weight Certificate
  • Marine insurance with chemical-cargo coverage; P&I sanctions clauses
  • EAC CET: HS 3102.30.00 (ammonium nitrate). Duty 0%. VAT exempt under Finance Act 2025
