Application
Kenyan barley demand is dominated by:
- East African Breweries (EABL / Diageo) — malting barley for beer production. EABL operates a domestic-procurement programme but supplements with imports during deficit cycles
- Animal feed industry — barley as a feed grain
- Specialty malt and brewing products
EABL's malting barley specification is strict — protein 9.5–11.5%, germination ≥ 96%, screening criteria — and origin selection is rigorous. Russian barley meets the malting spec where the producer is barley-specialised.
